Do you believe in magic recipes for success? I don’t. There are, however, things successful leaders have in common.
The people I’ve seen lead teams well don’t share a personality type, a communication style, or even a set of values beyond the basics. What they share is a set of habits: they make expectations explicit instead of assumed, they protect their team’s time from noise, and they’re consistently the first to admit when something isn’t working.
None of that is glamorous. It’s mostly unglamorous, repeated attention — showing up to the same standards every week whether or not anyone is watching. Teams notice that consistency long before they notice any grand vision statement.
If there’s a single practice I’d recommend above all others, it’s this: ask your team what’s getting in their way, and then actually remove it. Everything else in leadership is easier once that trust is established.
